Exhibit Designer

The Exhibit Designer is the lead designer, project manager, and primary client contact for a particular project. This person is responsible for all aspects of exhibit design from Planning/Programming through Final Design and for consulting during fabrication and installation. The Exhibit Designer coordinates with all departments and outside consultants to manage project information and ensure that design intent is maintained throughout all deliverables. The Exhibit Captain typically assists the Exhibit Designer in carrying out project responsibilities as required.

Specific Exhibit Designer responsibilities include the following:

  • Present design deliverables at all client meetings and lead calls during design phases. Act as the primary client contact.
  • Manage the project schedule.
  • Create “Project Start-Up Summary” page.
  • Coordinate closely with Exhibit Captain and draftspeople to carry out project tasks.
  • Work with Exhibit Captains to create man-hour budgets.
  • Coordinate closely with Writer to create design concept(s).
  • Create design “skinnies”. Communicate their intent to Exhibit Captain, draftspeople, estimators, graphic designers, and content Coordinators as required.
  • Manage the project budget by coordinating with estimators to ensure design is within the targeted budget.
  • Coordinate with Technology Specialist as required to spec and produce AV elements.
  • Coordinate with Content Coordination to ensure text, images, artifacts, and AV treatments are circulating as required.
  • Manage the hiring of outside consultants as required including engineers, accessibility experts, illustrators, etc.
  • Determine design changes necessary per Client Comments.
  • Choose colors and materials.
  • Periodically review fabrication in progress to control for quality, design intent, and client expectations.
  • Maintain knowledge of current structural and graphic production techniques.

Education / Experience:

  • B.A. in related design discipline.
  • 2-4 years experience in related field/position.
